We are all potential organ donors, without our having to express our explicit consent. If we don’t want to donate our organs, here’s what to do.
We are all potential organ donors
The French do not always know it but once dead, doctors can choose to remove one of their organs to transplant it to someone who needs it. This provision was facilitated by the decree of January 1, 2017 which specifies that “ post-mortem organ harvesting can be performed on a person of full age if they have not made known, during their lifetime, their refusal of such a levy, mainly by registration in an automated national register provided for this purpose “.
The idea can indeed be very disturbing for some, which is why it is not forbidden to refuse this direct debit. To do this, the procedure to follow is very simple: all you have to do is register on the Internet on the refusal register on the site national refusal registrar. You will be asked to attach a copy of your ID and if you wish to change your choice you can do so at any time.
Possibility to choose the organs you want to keep
It is also possible to agree to donate your kidneys or cornea but refuse to donate your heart. To do this, it will suffice to specify it at the time of registration. You can also refuse any samples intended for scientific research or for a medical autopsy, for example.
Before 1er January 2017, to refuse to donate our organs, we had to register on the refusal register by filling out a form that had to be sent by post. Since the online registration was opened, more than 150,000 people have registered on the refusal register. If you don’t have internet access, you can always write down your wishes on a document and entrust it to someone you trust. Your refusal will be respected.
