We can praise the anti-inflammatory properties of red wine, but its effect is not beneficial for everyone. University of Louisiana researchers recommend that all patients with multiple sclerosis (MS) avoid any red wine consumption. According to a study published in theAmerican Journal of Pathology, resveratrol, a molecule contained in this drink, accelerates the destruction of myelin, responsible for the proper functioning of nerve reactions, and increases inflammation in the brain. Results : symptoms of the disease, namely, chronic fatigue and a set of motor, sensory, vision, neurological and genitourinary disorders are multiplied.
US experts have only researched mice, but the lead author of this study, Ikuo Tsunoda, emphasizes the importance of this finding: “Resveratrol may have adverse effects in certain disease states and should not not be consumed by patients with MS pending further research. “
The mice were fed resveratrol for a few days to 2 months. The first symptoms like paralysis of the tail and hind limbs were quick to appear and peaked at three weeks. After five weeks of treatment, the mice that no longer received resveratrol managed to get back on their feet, but beyond this period the effects were too great and remission became impossible. The researchers explain this reaction by the vasodilator effect of resveratrol, which would promote the absorption of inflammatory cells by the central nervous system.
