Putin is rich, but the question is whether he is richer than Elon Musk. The fact is that he lives in a palace that you say to you.
The president of Russia is in the spotlight more than ever. This is, of course, because he started a war in Ukraine. Many of his wealthy friends, the so-called oligarchs, are now experiencing Western sanctions. They have become rich (partly) because of Putin. But has the Russian president also thought of himself?
Putin richer than ever
The answer is yes. According to official readings, Putin receives a nice 140,000 dollars a year. He says himself that he has an apartment in Moscow, three cars and a caravan. That is of course not true. There are various estimates of his fortune.
The highest estimate comes of Fortune. They claim that Putin is good for 200 billion. Then he’s on Musk’s heels. According to the business magazine, he “earned” this money after the arrest of the oligarch Khodorkovsky. Other rich Russians would then have been extorted so that they do not end up in prison. And with success apparently.
Another source is the Panama Papers. It says he has at least $2 billion. This is apparent from all kinds of offshore companies, which he is said to own.
Palace
Putin’s own interpretation is not so credible, because he lives in a palace on the Black Sea. The cost to build this is estimated at a good $1 billion. You can’t buy that with a president’s salary. The house features Greek statues, swimming pools, an ice hockey rink and a nightclub. Whether the sanctions directly affect Putin financially, that will be fine. But he probably already calculated that.
