The symptoms of psoriasis, an inflammatory skin disease, could be reduced with diet. Explanations.
- Psoriasis is a disease that is not contagious.
- The exact origin of psoriasis is still unknown but certain factors can favor its development.
In France, psoriasis concerns 2 to 3% of the population, according to theHealth Insurance. Generally, this pathology appears between the ages of 20 and 40. This can be defined as an inflammatory disease of the skin which is manifested by red patches covered with scales, small lamellae of dead skin.
A chronic disease
The disease is generally mild but can have a very negative impact on the quality of life of people who are affected, especially when it becomes chronic and flare-ups are recurrent. On the other hand, some patients develop psoriatic arthritis which can lead to severe joint damage.
No curative treatment
Currently, there is no cure for this disease. The solutions offered to patients only reduce the symptoms and, ultimatelyto improve their quality of life.
Anti-inflammatory diet
To avoid flare-ups of psoriasis, it is generally advisable to avoid stress, skin wounds, to regularly moisturize your skin, to pay attention to your exposure to the sun and, if possible, to eliminate alcohol and tobacco.
Omega 3
But since psoriasis is an inflammatory disease, adopting an anti-inflammatory diet can also reduce symptoms. Thus, it is for example recommended to consume oils rich in omega 3 which are natural anti-inflammatories.
Sweets, charcuterie…
On the other hand, other foods should be avoided. Sweets or cakes are at the top of this blacklist because sugar increases inflammation. Deli meats are also to be avoided and, more broadly, red meats which can cause or increase inflammation.
…prepared meals, fried foods
Industrial prepared meals are also not recommended because they are rich in saturated fats and refined sugars. And the list goes on and on: fried foods, breaded foods, white bread, baguette, etc. The ideal is therefore to eat a balanced diet, with fruits and vegetables every day!
