The caregiver who poisoned 13 retirees was sentenced to 25 years of criminal imprisonment by the Assize Court of Savoy. She asked the families for forgiveness.
The verdict is in. Ludivine Chambet will serve a 25-year prison sentence for poisoning 13 residents of the institutions for the elderly (EHPAD) where she was employed. The magistrate of the Savoy Assize Court opted for a heavy sentence, close to that required by the Advocate General.
In 2012 and 2013, the nursing assistant stationed at Césalet-Dessous, attached to CH Chambéry, administered psychotropic drugs to 13 elderly residents of the establishment. Victims of malaise, 10 die of it. Suspicions quickly turn to the caregiver, now 34 years old. Only nurses and orderlies can access the cupboard that holds them. And only Ludivine Chambet was present during all the poisonings.
10 days to appeal
When questioned by the police, the nurse admits having administered the products to seniors. But not to kill them. To “relieve them”. During the trial, the defense dwelled at length on the woman’s medical history to explain her gesture. Very surrounded by her mother, the Savoyard would have acted, according to Le Figaro, “in a daze linked to her own suffering”. Suffering motivated by the death of his mother, who succumbed to leukemia.
Faced with the judgment, the woman asked the families for forgiveness and said she was guilty of crimes. At the end of the trial, Ludivine Chambet’s lawyer did not specify whether he intended to appeal or not. She has 10 days to say so.
