The Secretary of State announced that the PMA would be extended to single and homosexual women from 2018, within the framework of the bioethics law.
Something promised, something due. Medically assisted procreation (PMA) will be extended to all women, homosexuals as well as single people. Marlène Schiappa, Secretary of State for Equality between Women and Men, confirmed this on Tuesday on BFMTV, specifying that this development should occur during 2018.
The opening of the PMA was one of Emmanuel Macron’s campaign promises. “Obviously, the president will keep his commitment,” explained the secretary of state. There is nothing stopping us from making assisted reproduction legal for all women ”.
“Social justice”
Marlène Schiappa indicated that such an opening came under “social justice”. “Currently, there are women in France who have the means to go abroad for assisted reproduction, and women (…) who do not[en] do not have the means and therefore (…) who cannot have a child, or who do so with artisanal methods that endanger their safety and health ”. This is “not desirable for the society we want.” “
This summer, the Secretary of State had raised the idea of making the PMA pass for all within the framework of the bioethics law, the revision of which is scheduled for 2018. “She said she wanted a debate” as short as possible ” to avoid “recreating society”.
“The company is ready”
At the end of June, the national ethics committee (CCNE) issued a favorable opinion on the enlargement of the assisted reproduction. The committee’s opinion was only advisory, but it was of great importance. According to the Secretary of State, the bill will propose the opening of the assisted reproduction system “to all women”, couples or singles. “I do not prejudge the parliamentary debate but that is what will be proposed”, she specified.
In July, the Minister of Health was also in favor of opening the PMA to all women. “The company is ready,” she said.
