Since Ansm’s previous assessment, 223 new women have had their PIP implants removed, without showing any warning signs. The number of these operations is declining every month.
Tuesday, Me Philippe Courtois, one of the lawyers of the victims of fraudulent breast prostheses PIP, lodged an appeal against the Minister of Health, Marisol Touraine. He called for the creation of a compensation fund for victims as quickly as possible. And according to him, there was an emergency. Because lack of sufficient resources for many women, “preventive explantations are stagnant,” said the lawyer from Bordeaux. According to the latest PIP report published by the Medicines Safety Agency on Thursday, the average explantation actually drops every month.
The average explantation drops by half
Indeed, according to the latest assessment drawn up at the end of December by the Medicines Safety Agency (ANSM), among the 17,411 women who had their prosthesis (s) explanted, 12,822 were done as a preventive measure. . Thus compared to the previous Agency report published at the end of September, 223 new women had their PIP implants removed, without showing any warning signs. These figures include all the explantations carried out between 2001 (date of the French market launch of these implants) and the end of December 2013. In comparison, 505 new women had their PIP implants removed during the previous assessment in the space of 4 months.
A dysfunction in 20% of preventive explantations
This preventive measure recommended by the Ministry of Health more often proves to be judicious. In 20% of cases, during preventive explantation (i.e. 2,555 women), there was a dysfunction of the prosthesis (rupture, oozing, etc.) and / or an undetected undesirable effect (effusion, inflammation or infections) by the examinations preceding this intervention.
In addition, for all explantations – preventive or not – the rate of failed PIP implants remains at 25.4% to date.
As a reminder, the PIP scandal concerns more than 300,000 women in the world who have had recourse to prostheses from the French company created in 1991. PIP is said to have sold its implants in approximately 65 countries. In France, these prostheses have been implanted in some 30,000 women.
