A 1904 Peugeot Type 67 sold for € 309,338 at auction. Over a century old, it has only known two owners in the past five decades. Restored, maintained and far from remaining on display, it is regularly engaged in historic races.
A 1904 Peugeot Type 67A 10/12 hp, a car therefore dating back to the French marque’s beginnings as a car manufacturer, recently changed hands in the UK. In excellent condition and frequently used, the venerable lioness was sold for £ 264,500 during an auction organized by Bonhams, i.e. € 309,219.

Peugeot, already well established in 1904

When Peugeot launched the Type 67 in 1904, the manufacturer was beginning to master its formula. It was already 14 years since he presented his first petrol four-wheeled automobile, the Type 2. Even seen today, the 67A which interests us here seems relatively modern.
Its 1.8 twin-cylinder engine at the front is mated to a four-speed and reverse gearbox. These two elements are connected by a cone clutch. The car is controlled using a steering wheel and three pedals, a configuration that was far from standard when it was released. However, the foot brake is linked to the transmission while a lever controls the rear brake. A manual secondary oil pump also betrays the car’s old design. The conception of this torpedo, like its design, is close to that of the Daimlers of its time.

An ancestor maintained and used
After a “first life” in France, this Peugeot Type 67 crossed the Channel as a rolling chassis in the early 1970s. It was then the subject of a complete restoration requiring the re-manufacture of parts from the original diagrams., before being able to be registered in the United Kingdom in 1974. Subsequently, its then owner participated several times in the historic London – Brighton race. He separated from the car in 1994. His successor took just as much care of it, replaced or refurbished many parts during the 2000s (water pump, pistons, transmission brake, etc.), and continued to register it regularly. at the London – Brighton test. When not in use, the car was kept in a heated garage.

The state of health of his owner no longer allowing him to use and maintain it, this Briton has just separated after 27 years. At over € 300,000, this 67A becomes one of the most expensive Peugeot in history. But it remains far from the 6.2 million euros claimed in 2017 by the Peugeot L45 Grand Prix des 500 Miles d’Indianapolis 1916.
