The best-selling multi-purpose city car in France has abandoned the automatic gearbox control lever in favor of a slider identical to that of the new Peugeot 308. Since mid-February, the 208 PureTech 100 and 130 hp, as well as the e-208, are equipped with it.
Marketed on the French market since the fall of 2019, the second-generation Peugeot 208 will go through the restyling box in 2023 in the same way as the Renault Clio. But, while waiting for a cosmetic overhaul of its muzzle which will lead to a significant change in light signature, it is evolving at the level of the automatic gearbox control. Remember that the 208 was the best-selling model in France in 2021, dethroning a Renault Clio 5 which seemed unstoppable.

A 308-style order for the 208
Released in 2016 by the Peugeot 3008, the imposing electronically controlled Cobra lever has disappeared since mid-February in favor of a much smaller slider and keys. This layout is already present, on the upper floor, on the Peugeot 308 compact sedan third generation, but also on board other achievements of the Stellantis group. The Citroën C4 and C5 X as well as the DS 4 are already equipped with it. As you will have understood, it is a question of rationalizing production and limiting the references of the same equipment. The manufacturer is also preparing the arrival of a new automatic transmission on the future restyled version, namely the e-DCT transmission from Punch Powertrain.
As a reminder, the EAT8 eight-speed automatic gearbox supplied by the Japanese equipment manufacturer Aisin Seiki since 2017 at PSA is offered, in the 208 range, on the 1.2 PureTech 100 and 130 hp petrol engines. This “space saving” command is also found on board the Peugeot e-208, the 100% electric version. Undoubtedly, the technical cousin Opel Corsa should also soon benefit from this lever, especially since the Opel Mokka SUV already has it in the range.
