According to an investigation by our colleagues from France 3, traces of pesticides were found in certified organic carrots. How is it possible ?
Pesticides in organic c’Bon carrots
Consumers who buy organic products do not expect to eat pesticides. However, according to a survey by our colleagues, it is not because the vegetables come from organic farming that they do not contain pesticides. To reach this conclusion, they had eight brands of carrots analyzed, four from conventional agriculture and four certified organic.
They were thus able to observe, among the four organic brands, that Carrefour, Naturalia and La Vie Claire were irreproachable but that thehe carrots bought at Bio c’Bon contained ” residues of three phytosanitary products “. Among the carrots from conventional agriculture, those from Lidl and a neighborhood early bird were contaminated. As for those of Leader Price and Carrefour, they contained no trace of pesticides.
The consumer must be informed
How then to explain the presence of pesticides in organic carrots? According to Jean-Christophe Batteria, journalist for France 3, “ organic farming imposes on producers an obligation of means and no results “. Therefore, ” they are responsible for what happens in their fields but afterwards there may be contamination in transport, during storage or if there is spreading in the neighboring field “.
The interest of this survey is above all to inform the consumer. The doses discovered in carrots being lower than the maximum limit of conventional and organic common residues (MRL), Bio c’Bon is not at fault. But his image has been damaged somewhat. In 2050, 50% of cultivated areas in France will come from organic farming, compared to 6.5% currently. This should significantly reduce the risk of contamination of vegetables.
