The presence of fleas caused the emergency closure of the Hippolyte-Desprès crèche in Perpignan. It should reopen this Wednesday, September 20.
Parents are used to fearing his smaller cousin. This time, it is fleas that bring life to the lives of families in Perpignan (Pyrénées-Orientales). City nursery has been temporarily closed due to the bugs, reveals France Bleu Roussillon. Time to clean up the premises and eradicate these filthy animals.
The alert was launched on September 15 by staff stationed at the Hippolyte-Desprès crèche. The establishment is infested with fleas which attack children. Sent on site, the Perpignan hygiene service does not lag behind. The premises are fumigated in order to scare away fleas. Last weekend, employees have to get used to it: the insects have decided to settle down.
This time, the nursery is urgently closed, the toddlers returned to their parents. A second eradication campaign is organized. “We didn’t want to take any risks with the children”, explains to France Blue Michèle Fabre, elected in charge of nurseries in Perpignan. The structure will remain closed until Wednesday, then should reopen.
A heavy liability
This bad surprise should remain inconsequential for the 75 children registered at the Hippolyte-Desprès crèche. If they remain the favorite prey of fleas, after animals, toddlers usually get by with simple itching.
However, superinfection of skin lesions can occur. It then results in fever and anemia. Disinfecting them with an antiseptic solution is therefore recommended.
Despite this relative harmlessness, fleas still get a bad press. It must be said that in addition to the itching, they were the cause of infamous epidemics. The insect can, in fact, carry the bacillus Yersinia pestis, responsible for the plague. It was through her that the Black Death, which killed 30 to 50% of the European population in the 14th century, arrived. The flea is also capable of transmitting murine typhus or even certain parasitic diseases such as tularemia or flatworms in animals.
