May 30, Ministry of Labor and Health announced new regulations on pulsed light and laser hair removal, which has been attracting more and more people in recent years. In a decree, published on May 24, 2024 in the Official Journal, it defines the professionals authorized to perform hair removal procedures, the qualification and training required of these professionals, as well as the obligations incumbent on them in terms of informing consumers and verifying contraindications and adverse effects.
Permanent hair removal: “consult a doctor before any first session”
According to the new regulations, permanent hair removal, which was until now reserved only for doctors or under their responsibility, can be carried out by nurses and beauticians who have undergone training. “initial and regular upgrades. The details of the training and the frequency of upgrades will be specified in a decree to be published.” Another measure: professionals must display information relating to the health risks linked to exposure to radiation emitted by the devices, contraindications to hair removal, and the recommendation to consult a doctor before any first session. “This fact sheet aims to enable consumers to make an informed decision about whether to carry out these hair removal procedures.” During the service, wearing protective glasses is mandatory and reporting an adverse event is strongly recommended.
Laser, pulsed light: trained nurses and beauticians will have to examine clients’ skin
The decree also states that trained nurses and beauticians must carefully examine the client’s skin before any session, assess their phototype, check for any signs suggestive of a contraindication and adjust the settings of the devices according to the phototype. They must also check for any adverse effects after each session. “Hair removal devices must be subject to regular maintenance carried out according to the manufacturer’s recommendations”, can be read in the press release.
