For clinical psychologist Céline le Bivic, “the psyche and the body are inseparable.”
- Today in France, 2.5 million adults over 15 years old, 850,000 children and 700,000 adolescents are affected by eczema.
- Eczema is a skin disease with multiple symptoms.
- “I think that eczema patients (even if they are all different) are prone to hypersensitivity because their emotions are very stimulated by this skin disease,” says clinical psychologist Céline le Bivic.
On the occasion of National Eczema Day, Clinical psychologist Céline le Bivic explains the links between this skin disease and hypersensitivity.
Eczema: “What a person experiences in their skin resonates in their psyche”
“We can talk about emotional hypersensitivity when a person’s reactions and experiences are very vivid and very intense, and this can appear disproportionate to those around them.”she begins first.
“I think that eczema patients (even though they are all different) are prone to hypersensitivity because their emotions are very stimulated by this skin disease,” she adds. “The psyche and the body are inseparable. What a person experiences in their skin resonates in their psyche,” she continues.
Eczema: what can be the consequences of hypersensitivity?
“The hypersensitivity generated by eczema can have social consequences (in the event of an impulsive reaction or withdrawal into oneself), accentuate the lack of self-confidence and generate great fatigue”adds Céline le Bivic.
To help them manage their hypersensitivity, the specialist advises people with eczema to communicate. “It is essential to talk about your experiences with those around you to be better understood. When emotions are a source of suffering, a consultation with a professional psychologist or psychiatrist may be necessary,” she believes.
Eczema: symptoms, origins, incidence and prejudices
For this 10th national eczema day, French Eczema Association has decided to mobilize for “fighting the prejudices that patients face have to face daily.”
The three most common forms of eczema are atopic eczema, contact eczema, and hand eczema. The symptoms generated by eczema are multiple: intense itching, red patches, scales, crusts, lesions, thickening of the skin, oozing vesicles, skin infections, pain, edema, burning sensations.
Eczema can be caused by several factors:
– the genetic anomaly of the skin barrier, with the excessive production of specific antibodies called immunoglobulin E (IgE).
– Excessive dryness of the skin.
– The permeability of the skin to environmental factors.
