Surgeons at Tygerberg Hospital in Cape Town (South Africa) have successfully transplanted a whole penis into a patient for the second time. This surgical team had been the first to perform this type of transplant successfully in December 2014. Then a team of surgeons from Boston had followed suit, two years later.
Surgeons in South Africa have just repeated their feat by transplanting the penis of a deceased donor to a man who had to be amputated 17 years earlier following complications from a traditional circumcision.
“The happiest patient in the hospital”
The operation lasted 9:30 a.m. and was conducted by Prof. André van der Merwe, head of the urology division at the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences at Stellenbosch University, on April 21. According to the hospital statement, the patient is expected to quickly recover and regain all urinary and reproductive functions over the next six months.
“He is certainly one of the happiest patients we have seen in the hospital. He is remarkably fit, shows no signs of rejection and all of the structures of the penis appear to be healing well.” underlined the doctor in an interview on Medical Daily.
