Paris has launched its municipal police brigade to storm the streets of the city. Unlike other French municipalities, the capital had never had one! The agents will in particular carry out road protection missions and ensure compliance with Crit’Air antipollution standards.
It’s historic! This October 18, Paris inducted its 1time promotion of municipal police officers. Since July 1800, and unlike all other French municipalities, the city did not have this unit. Why ? Because Napoleon Bonaparte had chosen to attach the police powers of Paris directly to the prefect. It was therefore necessary to pass a law to ratify the creation of this unarmed brigade and to give it a legislative framework.
The missions of the municipal police
Among other missions of general interest and assistance to the public, the Parisian municipal police will:
- control and sanction inconvenient parking cars and two-wheelers
- ensure respect for bus and cycle lanes as well as SAS bikes
- ensure pedestrian safety (refusal of priority, electric scooters, etc.)
- enforce anti-pollution standards (Crit’Air thumbnails).
154 municipal police officers to start
The Parisian municipal police force is a local police force present in all neighborhoods 24 hours a day. Ultimately, it will bring together the former Security Inspectors of the City of Paris (ISVP) and the Paris Surveillance Agents (ASP). All will benefit from additional training before joining this body. The future Directorate of Municipal Police and Prevention hopes to have 5,000 agents by the end of Anne Hidalgo’s mandate in 2026. For the moment, it has only 154 police officers.
