The pancreas is an organ connected to the digestive system made up of three parts: the head, the body and the tail. It performs two main functions: aiding digestion and regulating blood sugar levels in the body.
In cancer, pancreatic cells change and multiply rapidly. They then form a tumor which will disrupt the proper functioning of the pancreas and which will compress the canals of the digestive tract and the nearby blood vessels.
Symptoms to watch out for
Pancreatic cancer can be manifested by abdominal and/or back pain, significant and sudden weight loss or the onset of jaundice. To this day, this disease remains one of the most difficult forms of cancer to diagnose at an early stage.
According to data from Public Health Francethe estimated number of pancreatic cancer deaths in 2018 was 11,456. In the European Union, pancreatic cancer mortality rates increased by 5% between 1990 and 2016, making it the third cause of death in the EU, ahead of breast cancer.
As stated on the website of the national cancer institute“surgery and conventional chemotherapy, sometimes combined with radiotherapy, are the main treatments for pancreatic cancer“.
