A group of scientists carried out a genetic study on a large population, with the aim of determining the risk factors allowing earlier detection of the risks of ovarian cancer in women. Indeed, this disease is often serious insofar as it is discovered late, at an advanced stage of the tumor, and each year, ovarian cancer accounts for 3000 deaths in France.
Following this study, the researchers found a common genetic variant located on chromosome 9 that would increase a woman’s risk of having an ovarian tumor by 20 to 40%.
For the authors of the study, this first step will allow the early detection of women at high risk of ovarian cancer and thus monitor them closely in order to intervene before the tumor progresses.
