Last year, the target of 5,700 transplants was again exceeded. About 10% could have been performed from a living donor.
France is performing more and more transplants. In 2016, 5,891 organs were able to be transplanted, compared to 5,746 the previous year. Once again, the target of 5,700 transplants performed each year has been beaten, welcomed the Biomedicine Agency on the occasion of the publication of its Annual Report.
The diversification of graft sources has, in particular, allowed this progression. Since 2014, it has been possible to harvest organs and tissues from people who have died following discontinuation of care. Ten hospitals are authorized to do so. A protocol that made it possible to perform 114 transplants in 2016.
Donation from living donors also continues to expand. Last year, 576 kidney transplants out of 3,600 were performed thanks to a living donation.
“This success is due to the generosity of donors, to the daily mobilization of the collection and transplant teams and of the specifically trained hospital coordinators, to the support of associations, but also to the information campaigns which have made it possible to raise awareness of donation. organs, ”writes the agency.
All suspected donors
These television and radio campaigns have reminded us that every French person is a suspected organ donor. They also presented the new methods of expressing refusal. Since the 1er January 2017, French people not wishing to donate their organs can register directly on the dedicated website or entrust a letter to their relatives. The oral expression of his opposition is still valid, but relatives must now transcribe in writing the words of the deceased.
By thus strengthening the principle of presumed consent, while leaving the possibility of objecting, the authorities hope that organ donation will continue to develop. And the goals are ambitious. The new transplant plan for 2017-2021 sets the number of organs to be transplanted per year at 7,800, including 1,000 kidney transplants from living donors. Remember that in 2016, 22,617 patients were still waiting for a transplant.
Gamete donation is growing
The opening of sperm and oocyte donation to donors who have never had children has led to a significant increase in the number of donors last year.
Between 2015 and 2016, the number of donors increased from 255 to 493, an increase of 93%, and the number of donors from 540 to 729, or 40% more. Among the latter, 16% have never had a child. Donations that allow thousands of infertile couples to use medically assisted procreation techniques (ART).
For the agency, there is no doubt that the evolution of the law has made it possible to increase the donation. Its media coverage has also made it possible to increase the level of public knowledge. According to the report, 82% of French people know that sperm donation is authorized (+4 points of progression in one year), and 62% for egg donation (+1 point).
The rules of donation are better known: 45% know that it is not necessary to have a child to donate their gametes (+7 progress points in one year).
