Arterial hypertension (hypertension) is the most frequent chronic disease in France: on estimates that one in three adults is affected. Everyone who suffers from it knows that there are foods “to be absolutely avoided” like licorice, salt or grapefruit juice if you do not want to see the blood pressure skyrocket. And there are foods recommended to stabilize blood pressure because of their richness in minerals, such as bananas, oatmeal or yogurt. A new international study, directed by Australian and American researchers comes to remind you how much regular consumption of yogurt can help seniors who suffer from arterial hypertension to stabilize their blood pressure.
An effect only in hypertensive people
For this study, researchers looked at the relationship between yogurt consumption and blood pressure in 915 people aged 62 on average, with or without high blood pressure. In this group, blood pressure was considered elevated from 140/90 mmHg. The study showed a “modest but statistically significant” reduction in systolic blood pressure (the highest number) in people with high blood pressure. In contrast, the blood pressure of people without hypertension did not change.
A previous study had come to the same conclusion. The researchers then explained that the anti-hypertensive virtues of yogurt lie in its calcium content. This mineral has the ability to relax blood vessels and dilate them slightly, which keeps blood pressure low. Many studies have looked at foods that reduce blood pressure. Tea would be an ally against arterial hypertension, as are blueberries or beet juice.
