According to a British survey, a sixth of adults feel stressed as soon as they wake up. The morning routine is one of the solutions they find to fight against stress, sometimes aroused from the alarm clock.
- Chronic stress has many negative effects on health: it can notably reduce life expectancy and increase the risk of dying from cancer.
- Adopting a healthier morning routine, with a less aggressive alarm clock, could be a solution to combat stress in the morning.
From the start of the day, a sixth of us feels stressed. This is revealed by a survey of OnePoll, conducted among 2,000 British adults. One in six adults feel stressed when they wake up. It takes an average of 33 minutes before you finally feel a little better, especially thanks to the morning routine. Respondents agree that brushing their teeth, having breakfast and drinking a cup of coffee are things they need in the first hour of the day.
Stress: to soothe it, the morning routine is important
Taking a hot shower, following the news and making the bed are also other actions that many like to do in the morning, to feel ready to face the day. The survey also reveals that 39% of adults feel drowsy when they first get up, with 30% admitting they feel like they never want to get out of bed. That said, more than half (54%) really want to improve their morning routine. Despite the general lack of sleep, 32% of respondents say they can train their body to require less sleep than the recommended hours.
However, faced with lack of sleep, you quickly feel exhausted. Excessive sleepiness affects the ability to stay active and perform daily tasks at work and in personal life. As a result, the study also reveals that after battling all morning, 69% experience a dip in energy in the afternoon, around 3 p.m.
The majority of respondents use an aggressive alarm, which increases stress
On the contrary, 66% admit that they are so tired in the morning that they sleep in at least twice a week. Another interesting point of the survey: the way in which one manages the alarm clock, which can also be a stress factor in the morning. Of the 66% of respondents who set an alarm in the morning, 51% deliberately use an “aggressively loud” tone to start the day. Adopting a healthier morning routine, with a less aggressive alarm, could therefore be a solution to combat stress in the morning.
