December 28, 2009 – High Consumption of Fish and Shellfish Rich in Omega-3s May Help Prevent Colorectal Cancer, Preliminary U.S. Study Finds1.
The researchers analyzed data on omega-3 fatty acid intake from 1,878 study participants, 929 of whom had colorectal cancer.
According to the results, people who consumed the most omega-3s had a 39% lower risk of developing colorectal cancer compared to those who consumed the least.
Using the questionnaires, the researchers evaluated the frequency and quantity of the various polyunsaturated fatty acids contained in the foods consumed by the subjects during the last 12 months.
According to the authors of the study, these results support the hypothesis that polyunsaturated fatty acids play a beneficial role in the prevention of colorectal cancer.
