Nintendo is going to make movies and buy all the shares of CG production company Dynamo Pictures.
The first animated film based on the Super Mario franchise will hit theaters next year. Owner of Super Mario has already got the hang of it in advance and buys his own animation studio† Dynamo Pictures is now wholly owned by Nintendo and will henceforth be called Nintendo Pictures.
Filmed games
Nintendo is making the purchase at a time when more and more video games are being translated into movies and television series. This year, for example, a second animated film based on the Sonic the Hedgehog franchise was released and a television series based on Naughty Dog’s The Last of Us in production for HBO. Sony, which also owns its own film studios, recently released a film based on its Uncharted games and has already announced that it wants to translate more video games into films and series.
Nintendo buys all shares of Dynamo Pictures and that means that the studio becomes a full part of Nintendo. Nintendo expects to complete the acquisition by October 3.
We are curious which Nintendo games we will see in a movie. Super Mario is coming anyway, but we are curious if we can get ready for, for example, a Legends of Zelda series or a Donkey Kong movie.
