Before the new provisions relating to organ donation come into force on January 1, 2017, here are a few reminders to know everything and freely choose what suits you best.
How to refuse organ harvesting?
From January, we will be by definition all potential donors. Unless we do not wish it and that we make known this refusal. To do this, it is necessary to register with the national register of refusals organ donation by having previously downloaded a document from the website of the Biomedicine Agency, having completed it and returned by mail to the same Agency. A convoluted process that will only be a bad memory from January 1, 2017 where a scanned ID will suffice.
You must also write your opposition on plain paper, date, sign and talk to a loved one. The latter must indeed, at the time of your death, testify and transcribe in writing the precise circumstances of your refusal.
Why give?
It is also possible to specify the organs that you want to donate and those that you do not prefer to see removed. For example, you can donate your lungs but keep the kidneys. These choices must be carefully considered and that relatives are clearly informed of your wishes.
We give to save lives. No more no less. Last year 6,000 people benefited from a transplant thanks to organ donation. There are still 21,000 adults and children waiting for a heart, liver, lungs, kidney etc. According to the Biomedicine Agency, 80% of French people are in favor of organ donation and transplantation.
