While some were partying, others were hosting a happy event … According to the latest UNICEF report, 2116 babies were born on January 1, 2019 in France. A drop in the ocean since these 2,000 newborns only represent 0.56% of the 395,072 births on New Year’s Day in the world.
At midnight sharp, Unicef estimates that 168 babies were born in Sydney (in Australia), 310 in Tokyo (in Japan), 605 in Beijing (in China), 166 in Madrid (in Spain) and finally 317 in New York. (in the USA). So many lucky ones who will be able to shout “3 … 2 … 1 … Happy birthday!” Over the next few years!
According to specialists, more than half of the births that took place on January 1, 2019 occurred in the following eight countries: India (69,944 births), China (44,940 births), Nigeria (25 685 births), Pakistan (15,112 births), Indonesia (13,256 births), the United States (11,086 births), the Democratic Republic of the Congo (10,053 births) and Bangladesh (8,428 births).
Not all New Years kids have the chance to live
“It is very likely that Fiji, in the Pacific, welcomed the first baby of 2019 and the United States, the last,” they add.
But these beautiful births also hide tragedies, as Unicef reminds us: “in 2017, nearly a million babies died on the very day of their birth and 2.5 million during the first month of their life. Among these children, most died of preventable causes, such as prematurity, complications during childbirth or infections such as sepsis and pneumonia ”.
“We wish all babies born in France this year a life full of potential, laughter and health,” said Sébastien Lyon, Executive Director of UNICEF France. “On this day of celebration and joy, we have a thought for all those babies who will not survive their first day. We can, and must, redouble our efforts to give every baby a chance to be given a name, to laugh, to play and to live their life. “
