A team of researchers from the University of New South Wales (UNSW), Australia, has developed a new eye test capable of detecting glaucoma 4 years earlier than with current techniques.
A new test to detect glaucoma
Glaucoma is a disease of the eye, most often caused by increased pressure inside the eye. If left untreated, it can lead to visual impairment or even blindness.. The earlier the diagnosis is made, the less damage will be. This is where the discovery by UNSW researchers could offer good prospects. The latter have in fact developed a test that would detect possible glaucoma very early.
” The cause of the disease is unknown and no treatment exists, but its progression can be slowed with eye drops or surgery. », Explains Michael Kalloniatis, one of the Australian researchers behind the project. ” Early detection and early treatment are therefore essential to avoid blindness. “
Currently available diagnostic techniques can reveal glaucoma but at an advanced stage, and it is often too late to prevent eye damage.
Clinical trials will be needed
Australian researchers are sure this new test is effective. Their work with 13 patients with early glaucoma and 42 people with no apparent problem proves it. Thanks to this new test, vision losses could be detected in a greater number of patients than with current diagnostic techniques.
” On average, we are able to detect glaucoma four years earlier than today “, Welcomed Michael Kalloniatis who hopes to conduct large-scale clinical trials in the coming months that will prove the effectiveness of his prototype.
