1er September 2006 – The only chiropractic research chair in Quebec, whose creation was recently announced by the University of Quebec at Trois-Rivières, will try to understand why this therapy relieves some patients, but not others.
The holder of the Chiropractic Research Chair, Martin Descarreaux, explains that he will initially be interested in the “neurophysiological” aspects of chiropractic.
“It is wrong to think that all treatments are suitable for all patients,” he says. So far, clinical studies have only evaluated the decrease in pain or the improvement in functional capacity, without seeking to understand the mechanisms behind these effects. “
A better understanding of these mechanisms could eventually lead to an improvement in chiropractic practice by determining “what works, for which patient, by allowing us to design treatments better suited to our patients”, in the words of Martin Descarreaux.
The Chair then intends to recruit an epidemiologist – possibly within two years – in order to submit the findings made by the team of chiropractors to clinical studies. The goal: to better understand the neurophysiological responses of the human body to chiropractic treatments.
The Chair has a budget of just under $ 500,000, spread over five years. Its funding comes from the Fondation de recherche chiropratique du Québec and Platinum System, an IT firm specializing in the design of clinical management software.
