New media player for Windows 11 on the way

Microsoft releases a new media player for Windows 11. Testers of the operating system can already get started with the replacement for Groove Music. Windows Media Player will also remain available, as will the Movies & TV app.

The Media Player for Windows 11 is suitable for playing local music and video files. If you already used Groove Music, your music collection (including playlists) will be transferred automatically. The program is linked to the contents of the standard Music and Video folders of Windows. If you put MP3s, etc. in here, they will immediately appear in the Media Player.

You can also add folders yourself. Where Groove Music could only handle music files, the new Media Player also plays movie files. And there’s a handy picture-in-picture function, including controls. We doubt whether Windows 11 really needs three separate media players. But the choice is there, anyway.

First for Insiders

Windows Insiders welcome the Media Player first. Microsoft announces that the update is now ready for them and hopes for feedback in the near future, before the app also comes to regular Windows 11 users. You are of course free to use another program for this, such as the popular VLC.
