New emoji for 2022: A lot going on

The new emoji that are on the roll for next year have been determined by the Unicode Consortium. In total, it concerns 37 new faces and icons, plus 75 variants of existing emoji. This time there are a striking number of hand gestures on offer.

Take, for example, the handshake emoji. There were already five versions of this, depending on skin color, with the left and right hands always both the same color. From Unicode 14.0, a different color can be selected for both hands, so that up to 25 combinations will be possible. We also see an outstretched hand, a hand that points straight forward and hands that express a heart symbol back.

So many hands, but there is more. Such as a melting face for hot summer days, an emoji that almost wants to cry from happiness and a skeptical face. In addition to the pregnant woman, in the context of gender neutrality, a pregnant man or pregnant person can also be chosen. Send the dead battery to indicate low energy or the disco ball if you feel like a party. And then there’s the lower lip that gets bitten…

Google first

Most companies are expected to implement the new emoji from next year. The exception may be Google, which will start the rollout from October at the earliest. They are the first to appear in Android, among other things. Here is a list of all Unicode 14.0 emoji, including all skin color variations.
