Netflix is testing paying extra for sharing a password or account, but that turns out to be a huge mess. Or is it strategy?
The new Netflix account sharing restriction system isn’t working at all. Users in some Latin American countries will now have to pay extra for sharing a password. But the tests turn out to be a complete drama.
Netflix blunders with password-sharing system
The new rules that Netflix tests abroad appear to cause a lot of confusion, so they say users versus Rest of World† One user does indeed have to pay extra. The other user gets a message telling them not to share their Netflix password, but then nothing happens. Yet another user reports that he was never notified of any changes to the terms of service at all.
Now it could just be that Netflix is testing different approaches on purpose. After all, it is not for nothing that asking for extra money is currently only tested in Peru, Chile and Costa Rica. These are some of the smallest markets for Netflix. Apparently they don’t want to make us angry!
But even tests abroad proved too much. Recently, Netflix had to announce very disappointing figures. And sharing an account or password turned out to be one of the culprits, according to Netflix.
At the same time, it turns out that customers simply don’t want to pay extra subscription fees because Netflix is being stingy. The tests in the countries listed may reflect Netflix’s caution. If that is indeed the case: great!
