Research shows that Netflix has had its day, but the rest of the streaming market has a very different tendency.
Netflix hasn’t been going well lately, but that doesn’t seem to be the case streaming to say in general. Research shows that streaming services are bigger than ever and that is absolutely not going to change in the near future. Apparently there is a changing of the guard now that Netflix seems to have had its day.
Streaming research: peak not yet reached
You would think that the fragmentation in the land of streaming is causing consumer fatigue. But according to research of Antenna the opposite is true. In the United States, the number of streaming customers with a premium subscription has consistently increased in recent years at least 21% to increase on a quarterly basis. This enormous growth continues and in the past quarter it was even close to 25%.
In Q1 of 2022 alone, streaming services saw a net 7.7 million new subscribers. By comparison, Netflix lost 3.6 million in that same quarter! The era of Netflix seems to be finally over now that the original streaming service and trendsetter has reached its peak.
And that makes way for other parties. This huge increase in subscribers is mainly due to two services from the US, namely Peacock and Paramount+. So there will be more streaming services, but apparently we don’t have enough of all those different services.
The research shows in the graph below how Netflix is losing ground for the first time in a long time as streaming competitors grow. And there are more and more to come!
