Autistic patients, adults and children alike, are victims of widespread abuse, according to a collective. Direct mistreatment, but also induced by the violation of their rights.
Inadequate treatment, unjustified internships, non-respect of rights… The latest investigation by the Autism Collective, revealed on March 27, highlights the “generalized violation of the rights of autistic people” and the mistreatment of which they are victims. This is also the subject of his new campaign, which equates care to imprisonment.
“Prisoners of the French system”
“The rights of autistic people are constantly violated,” denounces the Autism Collective, which likens it to abuse. One in two autistic patients cannot consult their medical records in adulthood. Parents of autistic children are no better off. Those whose child is threatened with “unjustified confinement” are 8 out of 10 not having access to the medical file. ¾ of parents whose child has been abused say the same.
“Factories producing ill-treatment”
This opacity is also found in the care of autistic patients. 45% of them suffer from bad treatment or lack of care. Nearly 3 in 10 have received inappropriate treatment and as many have been threatened with unjustified placement in a psychiatric hospital or in a closed institution.
Parents’ observations send shivers down the spine: some report that they have not been able to know how their child is being taken care of, others have been the victims of pressure and threats when they have refused to lock their child away. offspring. Sometimes families even report inadequate basic hygiene care and worry about possible physical or sexual abuse.
In most cases, the abuse does not go that far, but is limited to methods that differ from the recommendations of the Haute Autorité de Santé (HAS). Four out of five autistic people do not have access to a suitable education, and therefore cannot thrive. Some even regress in establishments where they are not stimulated. Collectif Autisme does not call into question “the competence and professionalism” of all the institutes, but bitterly notes that some “become veritable factories to manufacture mistreatment”, for lack of means, but also because of poorly trained nursing staff. and a management that does not wish to develop the autonomy of residents.
Give back their rights to autistic people
“France prides itself on being the land of Human Rights and having one of the best health systems in the world,” concludes the Autism Collective. “What is she waiting for to give autistic people back their rights and support them with dignity? A petition is launched to demand the opening of a parliamentary commission of inquiry. Its role will be to shed light on the blockages and “aberrations responsible” for the violation of the rights of autistic patients.
