Motilium: already sold on prescription
This time it is the European Medicines Agency which has decided to look into this medicine by carrying out a new benefit / risk assessment. Domperidone is in fact suspected of causing undesirable cardiac effects.
Marketed in France since 1980, Motilium is only sold on prescription and doctors already know that it is necessary to limit its prescription in people with heart disease. But it is at the request of the Belgian health authorities that the European Medicines Agency will “analyze all the available data relating to the cardiac adverse effects of domperidone in order to be able to formulate an opinion on the possible measures to be taken”. According to these health authorities, domperidone causes cases of impaired electrical activity of the heart as well as arrhythmias (irregular heartbeat).
