To avoid crowds in front of high schools, some principals allow students to smoke in the courtyard. The Minister of National Education opposed it.
Should we let young smokers burn one inside the school? The question is currently under debate at the administrative court of Cergy-Pontoise (Val-d’Oise). At the heart of the problem, the risk of attack on schools after the attacks in Paris. The Minister of National Education, Najat Vallaud-Belkacem, took the lead. She believes that the protection of adolescents should not allow the consumption of cigarettes in middle and high schools.
State of emergency requires, school principals must avoid crowds of students in front of high schools. But for the Minister of National Education, “it is obviously not necessary that the security and protection measures call into question the Evin law”, she slices. Cigarettes must therefore remain banned within school structures.
Circular to establishments
This position is one week ahead of that of the administrative court of Cergy-Pontoise, seized by two anti-tobacco associations. They lodged an appeal against the written authorization to smoke in the walls of a high school in Courbevoie (Hauts-de-Seine). The non-smoking rights association also wants to take action against the Parisian high schools Voltaire and Rodin, which allow their students to light their cigarettes in the courtyard.
If the principals made these decisions, it is quite simply because a circular of November 25 recommended to them to avoid the gatherings in front of the walls of the establishments and the untimely exits between the hours of lessons. A request applied with a little too zealous, to the taste of some parents.
