57% of French people are against the idea of getting vaccinated against seasonal flu. This figure rises to 72% for people opposed to flu and Covid-19 vaccines. This is revealed by a Yougov poll conducted for the Huffpost.
- A majority of French people do not want to be vaccinated against seasonal flu.
- The most reluctant are the youngest (18-34) while the population most at risk, those over 55, are receptive to the idea of getting vaccinated.
- In the event that a vaccine against Covid-19 would be available this winter, more than one in two French people would not take it.
For 57% of French people, the flu vaccine is no. This is the result of a survey conducted by Yougov for the Huffpost on seasonal flu vaccination. While France crossed the bar of 30,000 people infected with Covid-19 in 24 hours yesterday, and hospitals are again close to saturation, the majority of the population does not wish to protect themselves against a new disease.
However, the flu and Covid-19 have similar symptoms, so vaccination against the flu could help avoid confusing the two diseases, which would avoid unnecessary trips to the emergency room.
18-34 year olds overwhelmingly reject the idea of getting vaccinated
The survey tells us that it is the youngest, between 18 and 34, who are the most reluctant to get vaccinated. Thus, 70% of them answered “no, definitely not” or “probably not” on the question of vaccination against seasonal flu.
Conversely, the proportion of people in favor of vaccination against influenza is greater among those over 55, a population much more at risk. Although they are still 25% to categorically refuse to be vaccinated, 39% think that they will “definitely” be vaccinated.
Less than a third of French people (32%) think that vaccination against the flu thinks it will have no influence on Covid-19 and less than a quarter of French people (24%) are convinced that vaccination will relieve emergency services. This fringe is essentially the same as that which believes that the flu vaccine will protect vulnerable people (30%).
Nearly three quarters of French people are opposed to flu and Covid-19 vaccines
Finally, in the event that a vaccine against Covid-19 would be available this winter, a small percentage believe that they will be ready to have it administered (34%). From a short head (51%), the majority of French people questioned are against this vaccine, since they are 30% to “definitely not” want it and 21% to “probably not” use it. Once again, the refusal is clearer among 25-34 year olds (42%) than among 35-44 year olds (36%).
In conclusion, these results show that those who are ready to be vaccinated against the flu are the same to want to test the vaccine against Covid-19 (65%), and that those opposed to the vaccine are for the flu as for Covid-19 (72%).
