It is a symbolic threshold which has just been crossed for the first time. In 2012, 5,023 organ transplants were performed in France. These results presented by the Biomedicine Agency mark a slight increase compared to the previous year. But this increase (1.57%) is more limited than between 2010 and 2011 (5%).
This transplant activity was made possible thanks to 1589 donors. The donor’s average age has risen to 54.5 years, a year older than the previous year.
In recent years, the Biomedicine Agency has encouraged transplants from living donors and the legislation has become more flexible. As a result, this activity experienced a growth of 15.8% in 2012 with 366 transplants performed. The main part (357) relates to kidney transplants.
