- People infected with the virus are between 19 and 84 years old.
In Europe, cases of monkeypox are on the rise. In one week, the number of people infected with the “Orthopoxvirus” virus has increased by “almost 50%”, more than 7,000 reported cases. Faced with this increase in contamination, the European Commission has made sure to have more vaccines against this viral infection. In total, she obtained 54,530 additional doses of the formula manufactured by the Danish laboratory Bavarian Nordic.
912 cases in France
“I am concerned about the increasing number of cases of monkeypox in the European Union”, said Stella Kyriakides, European Commissioner for Health. According to data from the European Center for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC), 2,477 contaminations have been identified in Spain, 1,790 in Germany and 912 in France. “As of July 12, 569 have been confirmed in Ile-de-France, 87 in Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes, 68 in Occitania, 47 in New Aquitaine, 47 in Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur”can we read in the location published by Public Health France.
25,000 doses delivered
“We reacted swiftly and ensured a rapid response through the new European Health Emergency Preparedness and Response Authority (HERA),” indicated Stella Kyriakides. Around 25,000 doses have already been delivered to six Member States. According to the Commission, the countries that have already received vaccines are Spain, Germany, Italy, Belgium, Sweden, Portugal and Ireland. Norway and Iceland will also receive doses in the coming month.
Extended vaccination
Since the publication of the opinion of the High Authority for Healthvaccination is offered to the groups of people most exposed to the virus, because “to date, in France, 97% of cases for which sexual orientation is reported have occurred among men who have sex with men (MSM)”, clarified Public Health France. From now on, vaccination is thus open to men who have sex with men and trans people with multiple partners, to people who prostitute themselves as well as to people working in places of sexual consumption.
As a reminder, the monkey pox virus is transmitted from animals to humans but also from one human being to another. This disease is manifested by an eruptive period with skin and mucous membrane lesions, fever, headache, chills, muscle aches, unusual fatigue and an increase in lymph nodes located around the ears, in the neck and the nape of the neck.
