Mitsubishi announces a new generation of Colt, which will be offered in Europe from 2023. This will be based on the CMF-B platform of the Renault Clio, offered as a hybrid and produced in Turkey by the diamond manufacturer.
The “ phasing out from Mitsubishi in the European market, announced in the summer of 2020, did not last long. After revealing an image teaser of the next ASX, the Japanese manufacturer is announcing today what will be its second model produced by Renault for Europe from 2023. It will be a new Colt. The seventh generation of the versatile city car will therefore be launched nine years after the discontinuation of its predecessor and sixty-one years after the introduction of the first.
A Renault base and a hybrid engine
Like the next ASX, which will be a “cousin” of the Renault Captur, the future Mitsubishi Colt will be based on the CMF-B platform of the Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi alliance. It will therefore be technically close to the Renault Clio; its marketing will follow the restyling of the latter. Mitsubishi announces a hybrid engine, which could be the 1.6 l E-Tech powertrain offered on the Clio. The Colt will not immediately replace the Space Star, but it will first position itself between it and the SUVs in the range.
A bit more than a rebadged Clio
The announcement illustration published by Mitsubishi hints at a specific exterior style for this next Colt. It will therefore not only be a rebadged Clio, as can be the new Mazda 2 derived from the Toyota Yaris for example. The overall silhouettes of the Colt and Clio will inevitably remain very close, and the Japanese will notably take over the hidden rear door handles of the French. Corn it will sport a more futuristic light signature on either side of the anvil-shaped grille dear to the brand. The Mitsubishi Colt will be produced in Bursa, Turkey alongside the Renault Clio.
