Far from being limited to the only one pregnancy monitoring and childbirth, the field of competence of midwiveskeeps expanding.
They can provide gynecological follow-up and, since 2009, prescribe contraception to healthy women. With the law to modernize the health system, since June 2016, they can now practice voluntary termination of pregnancy but also vaccinate those around mothers and newborns. The Order of Midwives recalls, on the occasion of the International Day of the Midwife, their role in prevention with pregnant women and those around them: “thanks to the possibility, acquired in 2016, of prescribe vaccines and nicotine substitutes to those around pregnant women and newborns up to two months after childbirth, their impact on families will be more and more important over the years “, specifies the ‘Order in a press release. Another example of this involvement of midwives concerns the experimentation of birth houses which is positioned as “an alternative to taking care of the birth in France”.
A profession with little-known skills
This growing role is a token of recognition for this medical profession which often considers itself to be poorly regarded and whose actions are sometimes underestimated.
To raise awareness of the profession, the Ministry of Health had launched a awareness campaign in June 2016.
