In Mexico, the world’s fattest man will undergo gastric bypass surgery to reduce his stomach and weight, his surgeon has announced.
When he was admitted to hospital on Friday, Juan Pedro Franco, 32, had already lost 175 kilograms thanks to medical treatment. Before that, the Mexican held a sad record: that of the fattest man in the world. He weighed nearly 600 kilograms – 595, to be exact.
Now, the man will undergo gastric bypass surgery in order to make him lose weight, reports the international press, which quotes his doctor. Gastric bypass surgery shrinks the stomach by creating a bypass in the digestive tract to decrease absorption of food through the small intestine.
Death of the record holder
The operation is not without risk. The patient must undergo a series of preliminary examinations before surgery, explained the doctor, who does not rule out possible complications.
The Mexican Manuel Uribe, considered in 2007 by the Guinness Book of Records as the fattest man on the planet, weighing 597 kilos, died last May.
Recently, the fattest woman in the world, of Egyptian origin, was also treated medically, in India, then in the United Arab Emirates. In 82 days, she lost 323 kilograms and weighs only 170. She should soon learn to walk again, after twenty years of sedentary lifestyle.
