Parent company Meta is working on paid features for Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp.
The bright minds of Meta are breaking their heads about how they can earn more money with their social media apps. Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp need to bring more money into Zuckerberg’s pockets, so a special department has been set up to identify and develop the possibilities for paid features within the apps.
At least that’s according to an internal memo sent to Meta employees last week, which tech website The Verge managed to get hold of.
Three billion users
The new division within Meta should seriously start working on paid features within the company’s main social apps. Together, Facebook, Instagram and Whatsapp have about three billion users worldwide, so a lot of potential to raise money.
The department is being created because of a decrease in ad revenue and because Apple has made changes to ad tracking on iOS devices.
Revenue growth
John Hegeman, vice president of Meta, indicates The Verge indicated that the company is still committed to growing ad revenue and that there are no plans to charge users to stop seeing ads.
I think we see opportunities to build new kinds of products, features, and experiences that people would be willing to pay and willing to pay for
Hegeman therefore thinks that in the short term advertising revenues will remain the most important, but that he expects that paid functions can certainly be an important source of income in the future.
For the sake of convenience, he leaves open what kind of functions he is thinking of. We in turn are curious whether users are also willing to spend money on it.
