This weekend a young 21-year-old student died at the University Hospital of Amiens (Somme) as a result of type B meningitis and, without there being any connection between them, a 9-month-old infant died in Laon hospital center (Aisne) following a sudden meningitis.
This brings to four the number of fatal cases of meningitis in the Picardy region since the start of the year. Last February, a 19-year-old high school student from the Somme had already succumbed to sudden meningococcal meningitis. And a young apprentice butcher from Gamaches had succumbed to the disease in April.
The parents of the infant and the relatives of the young student were taken in charge by the Department of Health and Social Affairs to receive preventive treatment.
Currently against meningitis B, predominant in France, there is no universal vaccine.
