The benefits of the Mediterranean diet have once again been highlighted at the annual meeting of the American Heart Association. A study was conducted among 19 men aged 24 to 62 with metabolic syndrome (a syndrome that is often a harbinger of cardiovascular disorders, diabetes or stroke). These men had at least three of the major risk factors in common: high cholesterol, hypertension, overweight or too high triglyceride levels. For 5 months these “guinea pigs” agreed to follow the recommendations of a nutritionist. The latter granted them 5 weeks of reprieve during which they continued to eat “American style”, that is to say with red meat, saturated fat, refined sugar … Then he gave them follow a Mediterranean diet, rich in fruits and vegetables, fish, whole grains, all seasoned with olive oil, for 5 weeks! Regardless of weight loss, all had 9% lower bad cholesterol levels when they were in “Mediterranean weeks”, significantly reducing their risk of cardiovascular disease.
