Postgraduate medical students will be able to lend a hand to the doctors in post. The Occitanie Regional Health Agency (ARS) is setting up a system allowing students at the end of their studies to work as an assistant to a liberal doctor. The departmental council of the Order of Physicians is requested by the ARS to authorize liberal physicians to benefit from ad hoc assistance from future practitioners (3rd cycle general medicine student).
This exceptional measure aims to compensate for the “departmental imbalance between the supply of care and the needs of the population”, explains the ARS in a statement. This lack of doctors responds to an influx of people that may be linked to the medical desertification or the increase in tourist activity.
An action to develop
This system is part of the actions carried out by the ARS to attract young doctors within the framework of the national policy of the Pacte Territoire Santé.
As of August 2, 2017, four zones have implemented this measure:
– the priority district of Narbonne Saint-Jean Saint-Pierre (Aude)
– the Saint-Laurent-de-la-Cabrerisse sector (Aude)
– the sector of Carmaux (Tarn)
– the Saint-Gaudens sector (Haute-Garonne)
ARS subsequently plans to develop this strategy in other departments of the region as needed.
