Apple’s Maps app in iOS 15 is rolling out slowly but surely and it looks great. This is what a navigation should look like!
Apple is working hard on 3D cityscapes to add in the Maps app. Not all cities are directly involved. As of today, you can navigate your way through a three-dimensional view of London. Apple enabled the experience for New York, San Francisco, and Los Angeles last week as part of the iOS 15 release. The feature will be enabled by the end of the year in Washington DC, San Diego, and Philadelphia. Apple will bring 3D maps to Canada next year, in Montreal, Toronto and Vancouver.
Maps app iOS 15
With this app you see much more than before. The 3D maps show you elevation details in each city, along with new road labels and landmarks such as LA’s Dodger Stadium, the Statue of Liberty and London’s Royal Albert Hall. A night mode casts a moonlit glow across the cards at dusk. The app will also soon be included in the improved navigation of CarPlay.
What is also handy: travelers who use public transport will soon be able to see via the app when it is time to get off the bus or metro. You can also see step-by-step walking routes in augmented reality, after scanning nearby buildings to determine your position and orientation.
The Maps app makes really big strides compared to its predecessor. It is unknown when the first Dutch cities will be added to the app. But it would still be great to see the Kuip or the Amsterdam canals in 3D in your Maps app. Bring it on.
