Misunderstandings often arise when providing medical devices to the elderly. Minister Schippers of Public Health wants to tackle this.
Infections and withdrawals
Party chairman Henk Krol of 50Plus asked questions about it in the House of Representatives, following an article in BN DeStem. In it, continence nurse Martinique Jaspers told the Bravis hospital in Roosendaal that she knows many cases of elderly people living at home who are incontinent, but receive too few diapers from health insurers and suppliers.
That would be for financial reasons. According to Jaspers, this has led to infections and hospital admissions in many cases. An 86-year-old woman from Rucphen eventually even died from the consequences.
From pillar to post
According to Schippers, all parties involved, including health insurers, suppliers and the professional association of nurses and carers, have been talking to each other for some time to come to better agreements about the provision of the aids. The minister wants to prevent the elderly from being sent from pillar to post in the future. Now that is happening: health insurer refers to the supplier and he points back to the insurer.
‘Big profit’
At the beginning of next year there should be concrete agreements that improve the provision of medical devices. Schippers says he will see to it that this actually happens.
According to Martinique Jaspers, this commitment means ‘big profit’ for all users of medical devices. Due to delays, agreements would not be made until 2019. “This is very good news,” said the nurse.
