An American study published this Wednesday by the specialized European journal Human Reproduction., That eating a diet too rich in fat could affect the quality of sperm.
It also indicates that men who consume the most omega 3, a type of fatty acid found in fish and certain vegetable oils, have slightly more sperm of normal form, than those who eat the least. .
Consumption of saturated fat and fertility
Too much dietary fat results in “deficit” sperm: Participants with the highest fat consumption had a 43% reduced sperm count and a 38% reduced sperm concentration vs. participants with lower fat consumption.
The study reveals that the relationship between dietary fat and semen quality is primarily associated with the consumption of saturated fat. Men who consume the most saturated fats have a deficit of 35% of the total number of spermand 38% sperm concentration than men who consume the least.
Researchers also find that men who consume more omega-3 fatty acids polyunsaturated (found in particular in fish and plant oils) have better sperm quality than men who consume less (1.9% more sperm).
A reversible effect
But fortunately, the effect on semen is reversible with restriction of saturated fatty acids: Lead author Prof Jill Attaman, researcher in reproductive endocrinology and infertility at Massachusetts General Hospital and professor of obstetrics, of Gynecology and Reproductive Biology at Harvard Medical School states: “If men change their diet by reducing their intake of saturated fat and increasing their intake of omega-3, then the effect is improved health general as well as reproductive health ”.
