March 20, 2007 – Over 80% of Canadians overeat even though they know their body won’t stand it, according to a recent Léger Marketing survey1.
Almost a third of the 1,495 respondents (31%) said they binge on food or drink of any kind at least once a week, and 49% at least once a month, knowing that this will have negative repercussions on their short-term health.
The most common consequences of these overeating are:
- gas, abdominal cramps and bloating (25%)
- heartburn (21%)
- diarrhea (18%)
- stomach aches (16%)

What are Canadians cracking up on? Thirty-five percent of respondents said they have a soft spot for desserts. Women (41%) are more attracted to sweets than men (28%). The latter are rather tempted by spicy dishes (16% against 6% for women) and alcohol (13% and 7% respectively).
About 12% of Canadians surveyed said they prefer fast food (fast food). This proportion is 21% in the Prairie provinces and 10% in Quebec.
Rich, creamy dishes top the guilty pleasures list of 11% of respondents. A small proportion (8%) said they prefer coffee and tea, as well as drinks containing caffeine (cola and energy drink).
Regardless of their dietary inclinations, nearly all respondents, 93%, said eating and drinking are among their greatest pleasures in life.

1. The Léger Marketing firm conducted a national online survey of 1,495 Canadians aged 18 and over between January 17 and 21, 2007. The margin of error is 2.5%, 19 times out of 20.
