Healthy eating is important for everyone, but especially for COPD patients. Because of this disease you are more likely to have weight problems. Fortunately, you can take this into account with your diet.
It seems strange that a disease of the lungs affects weight. Yet there are logical explanations for this. Shortness of breath can seriously affect the extent to which you can be active. The lack of exercise makes it easier to put on the pounds.
However, one in four people with COPD are underweight. For example, you breathe faster, which means that your body uses extra energy. As a result, you can lose (too much) weight quickly. Also, eating can be annoying because it is so strenuous and closes the airways.

Nutrients
Try to eat as healthy as possible when you have COPD. That is important for everyone, but for COPD patients it is extra important to keep their body in good condition. This gives you more energy and your muscles get enough nutrients to function properly. This allows you to move better.
Just eating more to gain weight will not help. When you eat more unhealthy things, you will gain weight, but this is only fat. Choose a responsible diet. Enough bread, potatoes, rice, vegetables, fruit and fish. In addition, dairy, meat and margarine are important, as are sufficient fluids.
Tips
Are you having trouble getting enough in? The following tips can help make meals more appealing:
- Eat several smaller meals instead of three main meals.
- Choose food that gives a lot of energy, so a varied pasta meal rather than lettuce.
- Eat more liquid or creamy foods, such as soup, fruit and vegetable juices or stew.
- When you feel full quickly, eating slowly and chewing well can help.
- Avoid foods that cause gas, such as cabbage, onions, and soda.
- Make the meal a party, with lots of choice and present it nicely, this will make you feel more like eating.
