The health authorities have placed a farm under surveillance, after having detected an outbreak of avian flu. The 8,500 turkeys will be slaughtered.
A new outbreak of avian influenza has been detected in France. After a gloomy winter for poultry – four million palmipeds were recently slaughtered – the departmental health authorities reported an outbreak of low pathogenic H5N3 avian flu in a farm in Maine-et-Loire. The 8,500 turkeys from the farm, located in La Jumellière, the delegated municipality of Chemillé-en-Anjou, will be slaughtered.
The breeding, located in the delegated municipality of Jumellière (Maine-et-Loire), about thirty kilometers south of Angers, has been placed under surveillance since Friday, with “a ban on any entry or exit of animals and material ”, indicates the prefecture of Maine-et-Loire in a press release.
Protection zone
The protection zone, set up within a radius of one kilometer around the farm, concerns another farm, where “the backyard will have to be confined”, the press release added.
Poultry from farms where the presence of an H5N3 influenza virus has been demonstrated, ie nearly 8,500 adult turkeys, will be “slaughtered for destruction at rendering”, adds the prefecture. These sanitary measures “can be lifted 21 days after the disinfection of the farm”, inform the authorities.
Selon West France, the detection of this outbreak occurred following a health check. A decrease in performance and the intervention of a veterinarian are at the origin of the procedure.
In March, a massive preventive slaughter operation was decided, covering 609 municipalities affected by the H5N8 influenza virus.
