Scientists at the Minnesota Mayo Clinic in conjunction with the Center for Disease Prevention and Control have discovered a new bacteria, the Borrelia mayonii, the cause of Lyme disease. It was detected in 6 patients infected with the disease.
Until then, we knew that Lyme disease was caused by the bacteria Borrelia Burgdorferi, transmitted to humans by ticks.
This bacteria causes disorders similar to Borrelia Burgdorferi, like fever, from headache, a skin rash, from neck pain at the onset of infection andarthritis at a more advanced stage.
In addition to these symptoms, the new bacteria are thought to cause nausea and vomiting as well as more diffuse rashes.
Borrelia mayonii has so far only been identified in the states of Minnesota, Winsconsin and North Dakota.
Scientists are not sure how the bacteria are transmitted, but believe thatit would also be transmitted by ticks.
Fortunately, infected patients respond well to antibiotic treatment usually given for Lyme disease.
